How to Self-Administer HCG Injections

Picture of a syringe and a vial filled with liquid. If you’ve decided to use human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) as a weight loss aid, good for you! For many people, taking HCG is a great way to help achieve weight loss goals, since it can reduce or even eliminate the unpleasant side effects often associated with dieting, including hunger, fatigue, lightheadedness, and nausea.

Many individuals who invest in HCG have never given themselves injections of any kind before. If you fall into this camp, you may be nervous and unsure of exactly what you need to do. Of course, you should defer to the specific instructions that were provided to you along with your HCG shots. But with that being said, we’ve compiled the following tips on how to self-administer HCG injections.

Choosing the Injection Site

HCG is usually injected into the layer of fat between the skin and the muscles, so you’ll want to find a relatively fatty area on your body. Many people choose their lower abdomen, in the space between their belly button and their pubic area (if you decide on this spot, make sure to administer the shot at least one inch from your belly button). Another common choice is the thick outer portion of the thigh.

In some cases, HCG will be administered directly into muscle rather than fat. If your physician recommends this method, you may want to choose the rounded portion of your shoulder muscle, or the upper outer area of the buttocks, close to the hip.

Preparing the Injection

If your HCG comes in powder form, you’ll need to mix it with sterile water to create an injectable liquid (this water will likely be provided to you along with your HCG powder—be sure not to use tap or even bottled water). Draw 1 milliliter of sterile water into a syringe, squirt it into the premeasured, room-temperature HCG powder, and then mix them together by slowly rolling the vial back and forth.

If your HCG comes in liquid form, you won’t have to worry about mixing it. Just make sure to keep it refrigerated until it’s time for your injection. You can take it out about 15 minutes ahead of time or warm it up in your hand to bring it to room temperature and make the shot more comfortable.

Now it’s time to get the syringe ready. Draw the liquid HCG into the syringe, then turn the syringe upside down, so that the needle is pointing upward. Gently flick the syringe until all of the air bubbles gather at the top, then slowly press the plunger to remove the bubbles.

Administering the Injection

Before giving yourself a shot, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands. Next, clean the injection site with a sterile alcohol wipe, and then let it dry. If you’re using a fatty injection site, gather 1 to 2 inches of skin and fat between your fingers, hold the syringe at a 90° perpendicular angle, and stick the needle into your skin. If you’re using a muscular injection site, you’ll want to stretch the skin taut rather than pinching it. Slowly press down the plunger, and then hold the needle in place for 10 seconds before slowly pulling it out of your skin and safely disposing of it.
