What Is HCG?
HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone that develops naturally during pregnancy. The hormone has several responsibilities related to ensuring a healthy gestation, including the ability to trigger a woman’s body to release nutrients from stored fat to nourish a fetus. Proponents of the HCG diet believe that daily injections of the hormone can trigger a similar response in the bodies of men and non-pregnant women.
While the specific plan you follow may vary, in general, the HCG diet will involve:
- Adhering to a strict, 500-calorie-per-day diet
- Administering daily injections of HCG
- Drinking plenty of water – at least one gallon – each day
- Avoiding sugary and starchy foods
The Four Phases of the HCG Diet
The HCG diet is divided into four phases, each with its specific requirements:
- Stage One: The Loading Phase – This phase lasts for two days. You should consume as many high-density foods as possible, including cheeseburgers, desserts, loaded baked potatoes, and pizza. By increasing your fat reserves during this stage, you can relieve cravings and encourage weight loss during the next stage.
- Stage Two: The Weight Loss Phase – Phase two is where the actual weight loss occurs, and it lasts for 26 to 40 days. During this phase, calorie intake is restricted, but food options are not limited. You can choose from a variety of vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, spinach, beet greens, cucumbers, radishes, and asparagus. Proteins such as white fish, lobster, crab, shrimp, skinless chicken, and extra-lean beef are also permitted, as long as they’re cooked without any added fat. The list of fruits allowed in phase two includes apples, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and lemons.
- Stage Three: The Stabilization Phase – During this three-week period, you should increase your calorie intake to 1,500 calories per day and begin reintroducing certain foods in limited quantities, such as almond butter, avocados, nuts, pork, tuna, and turkey. However, you should still avoid sugar and starches, meaning that you should stay away from bread, pasta, pastries, potatoes, and sugary drinks.
- Stage Four: The Maintenance Phase – After completing the first three stages, you will begin reintroducing healthy starches. However, certain foods should still be avoided indefinitely, including buttermilk, heavy cream, highly processed foods, ice cream, white flour, white rice, and whole milk.
