So, what is the HCG diet, anyway? Unlike fad diets that come and go, this diet was developed in the 1950s by a British doctor named A.T.W. Simeons. Dr. Simeons studied the pregnancy hormone, HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), and its effects on overweight patients. He found that the hormone, which can transfer nutrients from a mother’s fat stores to a fetus in the event the mother herself is malnourished, can perform the same fat transfer process in men and women who aren’t pregnant. Once his trials on overweight patients were complete, he finalized the Simeons HCG diet with the book, “Pounds and Inches.”
Many individuals find that the HCG diet guidelines originally set forth by Dr. Simeons are worth following if it means they can meet their weight loss goals. In general, the diet requires that you:
- Inject a specified dosage of HCG into your body daily
- Strictly adhere to a VLCD, or very low calorie diet
- Increase your water intake
- Do light exercises, such as walking
- Avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners, and certain foods
